Finding solutions for a better student life, Challenge Campus 2030

What people and our planet should be from the university?

University campuses are at the heart of the change: in 10 years, they should have achieved the 17 SDGs to be able to welcome and educate the next generation! What is 17 SDGs?

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. As it heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for actions by all countries to promote prosperity while protecting the planet, and to achieve each goal and target by 2030, including poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.

This challenge opens for students, professors and researchers worldwide to help build the university of future, with the mission to address the issue of student living standards, the campus in the city, and new educational issues.

Each team needs to provide at least one or several elements to address the issues including: no poverty, zero hungry, good health & well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water & sanitation, affordable & clean energy, decent work & economic growth, industry, innovation & infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities & communities, responsible consumption & production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice & strong institutions and partnership for the goals.

The Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) and The United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) are the organizers of this challenge. Created almost 60 years ago, AUF is one of the largest associations of higher education and research institutions in the world, brings together 1007 universities, grandes écoles, university networks and scientific research centres using the French language in 119 countries. While UNRIC’s mission is to communicate the values, history and mandate of the United Nations and its actions in building a more peaceful, fair and sustainable world.

After a 9 month’s competition and almost 2000 participants, the 6 finalist teams presented their project to a Jury of expert made of the challenge’s partners. The finalists were:

3. Campus Swap, University of Bahçeşehir, Turkey
4. Araucaria Universidad Estatal Paulista, Brazil & Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico
5. Chemsorter, University of Balamand, Lebanon
6. La Girafe du Congo, LoyolaUniversity , Congo
